Remove Metadata from Screenshots on Mac

The GG Network · file privacy

A Mac screenshot looks like a plain picture of your screen, but the file itself can carry more than pixels. Depending on how it was taken and what app made it, a screenshot can include the device model, timestamps, colour profile data, and — in some workflows — location information. None of that is visible when you open the image, but it travels with the file when you post it, attach it to a support ticket, or drop it into a README.

Where the extra data comes from

A screenshot taken with Cmd+Shift+4 is mostly clean by default — macOS doesn't tag plain screen captures with GPS the way a camera photo gets tagged. But metadata can still creep in a few common ways:

It's rarely as sensitive as GPS from a phone photo, but a screenshot with a visible device name, internal app version, or embedded editor string is still information you probably didn't mean to hand over — especially if the screenshot is going into a public bug report, forum post, or open-source repo.

Check before you assume it's clean

The only way to know what's actually in a screenshot is to look. Don't guess based on how the app behaves — check the file itself, and do it without uploading it to a random metadata-checker site, which just hands your screenshot (and whatever it contains) to someone else's server.

With scrub, checking and cleaning a screenshot is local and quick:

  1. Drop the screenshot inscrub reads it on your Mac — nothing is sent anywhere.
  2. See what's actually thereAny EXIF, XMP, or appended data gets listed plainly.
  3. Click Clean if anything shows upYou get a losslessly cleaned copy. Your original file isn't touched.

scrub re-checks its own output afterward, so you're not just trusting that the clean happened — it confirms the metadata is gone.

The short version

Mac screenshots aren't automatically metadata-free once an app, editor, or sync tool has touched them. Check before you share, clean locally if anything's there, and never upload a screenshot to a stranger's site just to find out what's inside it. See also: what a screenshot reveals about you.
