Metadata in Photos for Movers and Contractors

The GG Network · file privacy

Getting a moving quote or a contractor estimate online usually starts the same way: you snap a few photos of the rooms, the furniture, the damaged fence, and email or text them over. Those photos carry more than what's on screen — buried in the file is EXIF metadata, including the exact GPS coordinates of where the photo was taken, the date and time, and the device model.

Why it matters here

A moving company or contractor doesn't need your home's exact GPS coordinates to give you a quote — they need to see the rooms and the items. But if the photo still has its location tag attached, that's your home address traveling with the file to a company you may not have vetted yet, forwarded between estimators, or stored on a quoting platform you've never seen the backend of.

It's a small thing most people never think about: the photo you send for an inventory estimate or a fence repair quote is the same file format a phone uses for everything else, with the same hidden fields intact unless something strips them.

What's actually in the file

Clean the file before you send it

You don't need to hide anything from a company you've hired — but you get to decide when your address travels with a file, not have it happen by default. The safe approach is cleaning the photo locally, not uploading it to some random "remove metadata" site, which just hands your location to a different stranger's server.

With scrub, it's three steps and nothing leaves your device:

  1. Drop the photo inscrub reads it on your own machine.
  2. See exactly what's insideIt lists the EXIF, GPS, XMP and any appended data it found.
  3. Click CleanYou get a clean copy with the metadata gone — losslessly, so the photo still shows everything the contractor needs to see. Your original stays put.

If your estimate paperwork also includes a PDF or Word doc — a written quote, a measurements sheet — scrub currently detects hidden data in those formats rather than removing it; treat them as scan-first and check what's there before you send.

The short version

Quote and inventory photos carry your home's GPS and other details you don't see on screen. Strip it locally before sending it to a company you're still vetting. Get scrub free and clean a photo in about ten seconds.
