scrub

Does Instagram (or Facebook) remove metadata for you?

The GG Network · file privacy

A common assumption is that social platforms "clean" your photos automatically — so whatever GPS coordinates or camera details were embedded don't matter once you post. It's a half-true assumption, and the half that's wrong is the important half.

What platforms actually do

Many major platforms do strip some EXIF fields — often GPS — when you upload a photo through their app or web uploader, mostly to save bandwidth and to avoid obvious location leaks. But that behavior varies by platform, by upload method (app vs. web vs. API), by file type, and it changes over time without notice. Some fields — like device model, software used, or embedded captions — often survive. Direct messages, some third-party clients, and cloud backups frequently skip any stripping at all.

There's no public guarantee, no consistent standard, and no way to check from your end what a given platform did to your specific upload. You'd only find out the metadata survived after someone else already has the file.

Why "it happens after upload" is the real problem

Even in the best case where a platform reliably strips GPS, that stripping happens on their server, after your original file — GPS and all — has already left your device. If that upload is intercepted, cached, backed up, or the platform has a data incident, the unstripped original may already exist somewhere outside your control. The platform's cleanup, if it happens, doesn't undo that.

The safer order of operations

Clean the file before it leaves your device, not after. That way there's no unstripped original in transit or sitting on someone else's server, and you're not depending on a platform's unannounced, ever-changing behavior.

With scrub, this takes seconds and nothing is uploaded to check or clean it:

  1. Open the photo in scrubIt reads the file locally — nothing leaves your machine.
  2. See what's actually insideEXIF, GPS, XMP, and any appended data, listed plainly.
  3. Clean it, then postYou get a lossless copy with the hidden data gone, ready to upload anywhere.

The short version

Some platforms strip some metadata on upload — inconsistently, and only after your original already left your device. Don't rely on it. Get scrub free and clean the file yourself before you post.
